Provisioning
As an extension of the Identity Management solution
set, provisioning solutions are receiving an increased
amount of focus and attention. Where web-based Identity
Management systems provide a management framework primarily
targeted to web-based resources, provisioning solutions
extend the reach of the Identity Management by incorporating
legacy environments into the process.
Provisioning solutions, provide a coordinated, automated
framework for managing the user account lifecycle beyond
just web resources, incorporating mainframe, windows,
UNIX, e-mail, ERP, and other business environments into
the Identity Management process.
The provisioning phase of user life-cycle management
is one of the most visible IT processes, having a lasting
impression on the ability for an organization to service
the needs of their employees, customers and partners.
But the reality today is that most organizations have
individual groups responsible for each step without
a structured, automated, measurable process to ensure
that these tasks are completed an in a timely manner.
The provisioning life cycle is complex, including user
registration, identification of owner/sponsor, determining
the relationship, validation of identity, assigning
appropriate roles and/or entitlements, fulfilling the
request (adding the accounts to all of the required
systems, directories, and applications that the user
requires), ongoing maintenance and changes to the roles
and/or entitlements as the relationship changes, and
finally termination of roles and/or entitlements when
the relationship terminates.
At minimum, the gaps within most organization’s
manual processes result in improperly granted access
rights, increased information and privacy risk, increased
user management costs, and poor management of the customer
/ employee / partner relationship. The cost benefit
of automating this process can be significant, with
an average organization realizing investment payback
within 8-10 months.
